The New Video Vixens: Captions and Transcripts (SBLTN Lab Notes 033)
Captions and transcripts for video tools, Black Music Appreciation Month, and fun design tests for creatives
ACCESSIBILITY
Productivity Tools and Audio Accessibility
With video becoming more popular than ever, social media platforms and messaging programs will continue to integrate video-based features. With that comes me being the caption and transcript police!
Slack, a common communication tool for teams or online communities, actually has calls called “Huddles”, audio clip recording, and video recording*. Their audio calls offer captions and their audio + video recordings offer transcripts. For video recordings, the transcript has timecodes so you can skip to that part of the video as well!
*Some of these features may only be on the paid tier.
Loom, a popular platform for recording quick videos of your screen and/or camera, also has automated transcripts for videos. Unlike Slack, this is available even on a FREE plan and you can edit the transcript . With their transcripts, you can search a videos by what was mentioned, jump to the right spot by clicking a word, and watch with closed captions that you can drag around the video player.
❓ QUESTION: What productivity tools are you using and do they have accessibility features?
DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
Black Bops
Apparently it’s Black Music Appreciation Month in the States… and has been celebrated in June since 1979 (shh, I might get my Black card revoked for not knowing that lol). But the timing of me learning about it was great because I had just come across this Timeline of African American Music. It’s a long read but worth it for the journey through the eras and genres. If you’re like “but I just want to hear the bops!” then power-skim for the song clips in red or check out the interactive timeline on the bottom.
