IN THE MARGINS
Thanks to everyone still reading my little corner of the internet! The next few issues will be light bites as I wind down until the big countdown of New Years Eve. Hot take of the week: watching the ball drop in-person in Times Square, NYC, is overrated! 🪩
ACCESSIBILITY
Inclusive Design 24
Inclusive Design 24 (#id24) is an annual free 24-hour online event for the global community. It celebrates inclusive design and shares knowledge and ideas from analogue to digital, from design to development, from planners to practitioners, and everything and everyone in between.
This year’s replay videos are now available on YouTube. Here are just a few topics:
DIVERSITY & INCLUSION
The Café That’s Upending Capitalism
Cafe Euphoria has a radical and unique approach: The business is a worker-owned cooperative run by a group of eight transgender and gender-nonconforming folks who are all paid the same wage. The aim is to ensure the café breaks even, with income covering all expenses.
The commitment to equity, however, goes beyond the café’s workers. Everything at Cafe Euphoria—from the coffee and muffins to the thrifted clothing—is priced on a 3-to-1 sliding scale.
While Cafe Euphoria’s plans are ambitious, the staff’s experience so far also underlines some essential truths. Read about the bumps they’re overcoming on the road to economic empowerment and re-imagining their relationship with work.
Native Cinema Showcase
The National Museum of the American Indian’s Native Cinema Showcase is an annual celebration of the best in Native film. By embracing oral histories, knowledge, and ancestral lands, Indigenous peoples are creating films to better understand the past and imagine a new way of thinking for the future. All films are available on demand from November 18, 2022, 12:01 AM ET, to November 25, 2022, 11:59 PM ET.
ART & DESIGN
New York in the 70’s: An Exploration of Salsa through Type and Lettering
This lecture takes a multi-pronged journey through the salsa music scene in New York in the '70s by first digging into the work of Izzy Sanabria, a Nuyorican graphic designer, performer, and publisher. Next, we will be exploring the research, development, and designs around the globe that feature Salsa BT, a typeface inspired by the iconic logo of Fania Records, a New York-based record label founded in the '60s that is known for its promotion of salsa music.
